![]() If you want to jump straight into the Homeworld sectors, the Gate of Aarran is located inīe Warned! The map and this thread will contain major spoilers.įull descriptions of sectors have been added, with ship descriptions still to be completed. I have modded ships of the Kadesh using the original Homeworld textures, but these ships are eye candy only and need to be completed with weapons, docking ports and debugged to become fully functional. Here are the links to the original self contained Homeworld mods The download is fairly large due to the additional Homeworld texture files.Įxtract the zip file into your X3TC folder.Īlternately mod any of the ships or map as you see fit. I have merged most of the fantastic Homeworld Mod Ships created by XDV_3195, KNT79, Balogt and Anubitas, which are all available to be cheated or scripted in if desired. The larger derelict models such as the Dreadnaught Berth and the Karos Lighthouse will need to be created from scratch, but I don’t have the modelling skills required to create such models. As well as the Ghost Ship, the wreckage of the mothership scaffold in Kharak and the JunkYard Office in the Karos Graveyard. Most derelicts will be represented such as the Kha Toba and Kha Salim. The Balcora gate is there, as well as the Gate of Aarran which connects X3 to the Homeworld galaxy. I only have asteroids to add, but I have added Vaygr command stations created by XDV_3195 in Outer Gehenna and Thaddis Sabbah sectors. Don’t expect original HW backgrounds as these tended to be in the orange colour range and will feel claustrophobic when added. Original HW music is in place as are most of the planets. This is deliberate to create a feeling that you have entered a new Galaxy. ![]() With Moonrat, Connary and Realspace’s kind permission and credit, I have used their work as the backgrounds and planets to the HWU map, but kept with the original backgrounds for the X3 universe map both maps are connected as a single universe. The backgrounds are X3 as I have not yet learned to import the HW backgrounds. There are of approx 60 sectors which include HW, HW2 and HWC locations with the map and these sectors are recreated as faithfully as possible to the original games. It will leave modders free to focus on ship modelling, factories and scripts/missions. The mod kit was created to be used for future Homeworld modders or even a total conversion. The mod connects both the Homeworld and X3 universes together with a single Hyperspace Gate. This new mod kit is in its development stage.

The entire idea of a dark version of Hyrule was impressive and shocking enough from a lore perspective, but it was the execution of that concept that alerted a lot of people to the fact that the future of console gaming was going to be more advanced than they had dared dream. At a time when parents everywhere were asking why kids needed a new Nintendo when they already owned one, A Link to the Past was one of those early SNES titles that showed “better graphics” were only a part of the promise offered by the next generation. ![]() How could one of the biggest games a lot of people had played up until that point suddenly offer what was essentially an entirely new world to explore? More importantly, how was it possible that the game let you bounce between the light and dark worlds? It genuinely felt like you had just purchased two games for the price of one and that both were better than 95% of everything else out there. Sure, it’s easy enough to see the palette swaps and other clever design techniques that made that world work on a technical level, but the whole thing seemed so…impossible at the time. You never forget your first trip into the dark world. By doing so, they helped set the template for the storytelling style that helps makes the Zelda franchise’s lore and timeline so compelling (if admittedly sometimes frustrating). In retrospect, it’s pretty impressive that the Link to the Past team avoided the temptation of simply inserting more direct storytelling sequences while still crafting a world and narrative worthy of the biggest RPGs at the time. It managed to greatly expand the series’ mythology without sacrificing any of the adventure gameplay excellence that had come to define the series until that point. It was the first Zelda game that really figured out how the franchise was going to give you just enough direct storytelling to keep things interesting but not so much that you ever felt like you were watching an adventure rather than experiencing it. The plot was brought up often enough to keep things moving along, but the game often still left you with quite a few questions about what it all meant.Ī Link to the Past introduced us to the Sages, greatly expanded Ganon’s role, and threw a massive wrench into the franchise’s previous simple timeline by taking us back to Hyrule’s past. ![]() They gave you the sense that the Zelda team was sitting on this epic fantasy story they were just waiting to unleash.Ī Link to the Past certainly has more story than the previous Zelda games, but it still didn’t deliver the kind of Final Fantasy-like sweeping narrative that some suspected a more advanced Zelda game might eventually feature. If you wanted to understand what they were all about, you had to read the instruction manuals and try to make the most out of vague context clues. The first two Legend of Zelda games featured impressive stories for their time, but so much of their narratives took place on the margins of the actual game. Yet, it’s important to realize that those improvements wouldn’t have been possible if A Link to the Past hadn’t shown us what kind of storytelling and worldbuilding Zelda games were capable of. ![]() ![]() If I were a close friend or family member of someone participating in this project, I’d want to know if my private conversations were being archived somewhere and potentially viewable by researchers. (Another example: It’s not technically a violation of ethics to use data from “public” sources like YouTube videos or tweets, but people who discover that their personal data has been used in research are often put off by it.) And it’s not only study participants’ data that will be collected-anyone they text or message with can have their words screenshotted too. But required research ethics scratch only the surface of what is morally right. Technically, as long as participants consent to their data being recorded, standard research ethics wouldn’t require researchers to do much else to protect users’ privacy. The researchers say this data will be encrypted, stored securely, and de-identified. On the project’s website, a clip shows screenshots representing three minutes of a user’s activity, which includes Google searches, Spotify playlists, scrolling through Instagram, and texts between friends. The idea is that the screenshots will provide a more nuanced look at “screen time” and the myriad ways we use our phones. In January, Stanford scientists announced a new endeavor called the Human Screenome Project, which takes screenshots of participants’ phone use every five seconds. There are entire online subcommunities dedicated to private drama made public via screenshots Facebook groups like “i am but a simple moth to a dumpster fire” and “ that’s it, i’m wedding shaming” or subreddits like r/texts are built on screenshots of silly exchanges and ridiculous arguments.Īnd now, screenshots might become fodder for researchers. When someone makes a claim and insists they have the receipts, they’re often screenshots-a series of Instagram DMs, text messages, private social media posts. Once-private or semi-private messages make the rounds online, entertaining us and stirring up drama. Sharing screenshots has become a normal part of our digital behavior. Some screenshots have never left my phone and are only for me, while I’ve sent others (usually the funny ones) to friends I think would enjoy them. Each of those came from a closed or private online space, but I wanted to make sure I had some record of them just in case. Scrolling through my own phone, I see screenshots of Instagram comments that made me laugh, a threatening email from an irate reader, and a weird post from my neighborhood group about an aggressive crow. Screenshots reflect the itch to document a moment that evoked emotion: amusement, incredulity, anger (or maybe all three). But one thing challenges all of that: screenshots. I cherish the implicit trust that should our conversation about my “which March sister are you” quiz results turn toward more private topics, those words won’t leave my screen or my friends’. In addition, many groups enforce privacy through norms and etiquette: Like the rules of Fight Club, members shouldn’t talk about the group with nonmembers, and most definitely should not share things from this group with anyone outside of it. These more private spaces often require a special invitation, curated by moderators, and posts made in them can’t be viewed by or shared to people outside the circle. Twitter, too, is introducing ways for users to interact in smaller, less-public communities. “People are more cautious of having a permanent record of what they’ve shared,” Mark Zuckerberg wrote in a post announcing the platform’s shift toward prioritizing closed groups and other private communications. It’s no wonder, then, that people have moved toward smaller, more intimate online communities where conversations aren’t as public. It can destroy careers for noncelebrities too, like Justine Sacco, who was famously fired after her insensitive tweet went viral. ![]() Anything you say publicly-on a blog, in a Facebook post, in a tweet-could be shared far beyond the audience you imagined, and that’s wreaked havoc on countless occasions: Scores of celebrities have come under fire for their social media indiscretions. Bard petitions Thorin, reminding him that not all of Smaug's treasure has come from Thorin's people. With several armies approaching for their share of Smaug's treasure, the mountain is in danger and Thorin makes the situation worse by calling upon his relatives to come from various lands and claim what is rightfully theirs. As told by Tolkien in The Hobbit, it took many days to find the door, and luckily for Thorin and Company they did not arrive on Durin's day so they had plenty of time to enter the mountain. In Chapter 15, Thorin intends to secure his kingdom, but he moves with little wisdom. Set into the side of the mountain was a secret door, five feet high and wide enough for three to walk through abreast. Gandalf had managed to obtain the door's key, which fit a key hole which could be found only when the setting sun and the last moon of autumn (also known as Durin's Day) were in the sky would the light shine upon the keyhole. In TA 2941, Bilbo Baggins and Thorin's company traveled to the Lonely Mountain to regain the treasure Smaug had stolen. This is told in detail in The Quest of Erebor and described by Tolkien's song, "Far Over the Misty Mountains Cold". For many years thereafter the Dwarves lived in exile in the Blue Mountains until, by a seemingly chance meeting, Gandalf the Greymet Thorin Oakenshield and together they planned to reclaim the mountain. While Thorin Oakenshield was out hunting one day in TA 2770, Smaug came from the mountains and invaded the Lonely Mountain, hoarding all its wealth for himself. In this time, the Dwarves became very rich and amassed a large amount of gold and treasure which included the jewel known as the Arkenstone. By TA 1999, it had become a Dwarven stronghold, where the Dwarves became a numerous and prosperous people. The survivors under Thráin I followed him to the Lonely Mountain and the colony became the ancestral home of the King under the Mountain. The Dwarves have lived and mined in the mountain during the Second Age, but it wasn't until the mid-Third Age that the colony had become a firmly established Kingdom of the Longbeards, after the fall of the ancient Kingdom of Khazad-dûm due to the awakening of a Balrog (who was later known as Durin's Bane) in TA 1981. A mining colony was soon set up and a road was laid out to connect the Dwarves to their great cities from the Iron Hills and as far west as their realms and possessions in the Blue Mountains. The Dwarves of Durin's Folk discovered the mineral wealth of the Lonely Mountain sometime after the awakening of the first Durin. The mountain was named "Erebor" in Sindarin. It was located in northeast of Rhovanion, and was the source of the River Running. For the latter half of the Third Age, the Lonely Mountain was the greatest city in Middle-earth. ![]() Helpful utility functions that get used all over.
